Houston In-Home Test Preparation Courses
ACT
The American College Testing Assessment (ACT)
USE: College Admissions
SECTIONS: 4-5 (English, Math, Reading & Science Reasoning; Optional Writing Section)
TIME: 2 hours & 55 minutes
FORMAT: Multiple Choice
SCORING: You get 12 separate scores, though, the Composite Score is the most important. Ranges from 1-36.
NATIONAL AVERAGE SCORE: 20-22
USE: Course Placement, College Admissions, College Credit
SUBJECTS: Available for more than 30 courses. To find out more, please speak to your student's advisor.
TIME: 2-3 hours
FORMAT: Multiple Choice, Short Answer &/or Essay (Varies By Test)
SCORING: Graded on a scale of 1-5, with 5 being the highest.
USE: High School Diploma Equivalent
SUBJECTS: (5) Mathematics, Science, Social Studies, Writing Skills, and Interpreting Literature and the Arts.
TIME: 7 hours & 5 minutes total. Each subject is timed and tested separately.
FORMAT: Multiple Choice or Essay (varies by subject)
SCORING: Graded on a scale of 20-80; The passing grade in Texas is 45 overall.
NATIONAL AVERAGE SCORE: 50
Graduate Record Examination
Extra-Step Tutoring offers test prep for the General Version of the GRE, along with test prep for 5 of the 8 available subject tests.
General Test
USE: Graduate School Admission
SECTIONS: Analytical Writing, Verbal Skills and Quantitative Skills
TIME: 3 hours & 15 minutes (Computer-Based Test) or 3 hours & 45 minutes (Paper-Based Test)
FORMAT: Multiple Choice or Essay (varies by section)
SCORING: The General Test is graded by section: Analytical Writing: 0-6; Verbal Skills: 200-800; Quantitive Skills: 200-800
Subject Test

USE: Specific Graduate School Admission
SUBJECTS: Biochemistry (Cell & Molecular Biology), Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Computer Science, Literature in English, Mathematics & Psychology.
TIME: 2 hours & 50 minutes
FORMAT: Multiple Choice
SCORING: Varies by Subject. Generally, it is a raw score which is then converted to a scaled score so that comparisons can be made.
The Independent School Entrance Exam
USE: Admission Into A Private Middle or High School (not all schools use this test.)
SECTIONS: Math, Verbal, Essay
TIME: 3 hours
FORMAT: Multiple Choice & Essay
USE: Law School Admission
SECTIONS: Logical Reasoning, Logic Games, Reading Comprehension, Experimental, Writing Sample.
TIME: 3 hours & 25 minutes Total
FORMAT: Multiple Choice & Essay
SCORING: Graded on a scale of 120-180
NATIONAL AVERAGE SCORE: 151
USE: Graduate School Admission, sometimes used in place of the GRE.
SUBJECT: Consists of 100 partial analogies
TIME: 50 minutes
FORMAT: Multiple Choice
SCORING: Raw score based on number correct out of 100.
USE: Practice for the SAT test. Scholarship committees typically use these scores to determine eligibility. Usually taken in 10th or 11th Grade.
SECTIONS: Verbal, Math & Writing Skills.
TIME: 2 hours & 10 minutes
FORMAT: Multiple Choice & Answer Grid (Math Section)
SCORING: Graded on a scale of 60-240 (combines the actual score from each section)
NATIONAL AVERAGE SCORE: 147 (11th grade students)
USE: College Admissions
SECTIONS: Critical Reading, Mathematics & Writing
TIME: 3 hours & 45 minutes
FORMAT: Multiple Choice & Answer Grid (Math Section)
SCORING: Sections scored separately on a scale of 200-800. The cumulative score is also reported (Math + Reading+Writing)
NATIONAL AVERAGE SCORE: The average score is 500 for each section, 1500 cumulative.
SAT II
SAT (Scholastic Aptitude Test) II: Subject Test

USE: Tests proficiency in a specific subject. Some colleges require one or more subject tests along with the SAT I.
SUBJECTS: Available for 20 subjects. To find out more, please speak to your student's advisor.
TIME: 1 hour
FORMAT: Multiple Choice
SCORING: Scored on a scale of 200-800.
NATIONAL AVERAGE SCORE: Each test has a different average, though a 600 is considered a solid score on any of them.
USE: Admission Into A Private Middle or High School (not all schools use this test.)
SECTIONS: Math, Verbal, Reading Comprehension & Essay
TIME: 2 hours & 25 minutes
FORMAT: Multiple Choice & Essay

Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills

TOEFL
Test of English as a Foreign Language
USE: Tests proficiency of the English Language. Accepted by more than 4000 college's.
TIME: Varies on type (computer or paper based)
SCORING: No passing or failing score is given. Scored on a proficiency scale of 83 (elementary) to 267 advanced. A 300 is a perfect score.
